Is there a library of wall paint materials' glossy, simi-gloss, and satin? it seems like it would be an easy download somewhere. MAX has it, ArchiCAd has it, and so does Revit.

It seems like it's a decade overdue; a library from V-Ray. I have some stock that I use, but I never got around to wall paint.

I say that because today I just spent 2 hours trouble shooting a scene. Everything was optimized, but the rendering times were through the roof and noisy. I went through each material and it was a dang material I was using on my walls. I don't know what the problem was, but when I created a generic material everything started working well. This happens to me often, so a library of quality materials, from a known source, would be awesome. The sites I see that anyone can upload are a nightmare, which is where I got this wall paint. It would be nice to have a pull down, in the V-Ray material editor, that sets defaults for material types. Stone, glossy wood, blurry wood, concrete, paint.... You knowm like all the other render engines

You think grant's is going to be fast?

The issue with a material library is that ones that render fast might not look good enough closeup and the ones that look good close take 10x as long to render. everyone has wildly different requirements of their materials which change every job. do you do everything procedural for file size (but even slower renders), or include maps, and at what resolution?

The advanced users can create their own, or know how to tweak it fast. The beginners, or someone who doesn't want the software to get it the way, it can be a balance between good and fast. I can tweak or create my own, but I also want something fast for early iterations.

Did you take a look at V-Ray Material Presets Pro for Max (http://www.sigershop.eu/) ?
I don't use this personally so I can't give any opinion about it. But it looks like what you are looking for.

I can vouch for it but some of the materials definitely need tweaking. A lot of their glass mats for example do not have Affect Alpha enabled for the Refraction, which is boring to enable every time, and some of their reflective materials really need optimising with the glossy samples etc. (sometimes way too low, sometimes way too high). But for the most part they are a solid basis to work from.

I have looked at it, but the subscription is confusing as heck, so I never followed through

It is, I agree! I think the gist of it is that if you want updates after the first year then you need a subscription, but you can continue to use the plugin unaffected after this without one. You just won't get any updates (they add and change materials).

I just revisited and still confusing. I pick what I want and it takes me to a subscription list, but it doesn't explain what subscription is needed for what I want. They really need to make it much clearer.
