  • 12k night rendering

    Hi,

I have to render 12k night rendering in a quite fast schedule. It's a shame I have to use retrace threshold cause it seems to slow down the render quite a bit. What are the biggest possible time savers when rendering in big resolutions? I don't have much time to do test renders but it works fine in 3.5k resolution. How much smaller the irradiance map can be so it still works fine?

Every time you double the resolution, you can decrease the imap min/max rate by one. What are the values for the 3.5k image?

You can also turn down the retrace amount in order to speed things up a bit.

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Values for the 3.5k are -1 and -4. When rendering in 3.5k the render finished nicely during the night. When rendering in 12k just a small portion of the irr cache was finished. Memory is not an issue, I have plenty of it. I'll have to try with lower min/max rate. Slowest part of the render are the windows with artificial lights. And the building has plenty of windows.

try a small test with color mapping on reinhard and burn 0.05. Can also try enable clamp and set it to something like 3

I have had a few of these beasts and a render farm was my way out. I have really fallen in love with the universal method, which renders clean, but slow. I can render locally at 3k, but anything more I use Rebus. A typical render might cost me $20.

What file size is your typical project in total with max and maps etc, what is your internet speed and how long does it all take to transfer and then when its done get the files back?
            Kind Regards,

My projects are usually 1+ Gb. I am on 30MB and it might take an hour+ to upload. Once done, it'll download the files to my project folder, which takes minutes. If the texture maps are already on their server it will know and skip the file. So, other views are quick to upload.

@Glorybound - Thanks for the info

Had an experience where the client wanted 8k + res files, spent days rendering :P ..

I lowered min/max values and used reinhard color mapping. Last night I rendered almost half the picture. So thanks for the tips. I am going to make this nicely in time. It seems that reinhard speeded the rendering in windowed areas. Does this have something to do with contrast thing or it it just my imagination

Reinhard mapping with Burn values close to 0 clamps pixel values above 1.0 which could speed up the rendering a lot especially in scenes with a lot over-burned areas.

I can't say enough good things about solid rocks if you're going up above 8k. I realize it's cheating a bit but it's very good at optimizing huge render sizes. (just turn off gamma in there, it loves to wreck gamma) I had a stadium I did for a prominent shoe company that was over 30k wide and I wouldn't have gotten it done without Solid rocks. Render took 6 hours.
