  • Big file sizes.

    Hi,

I know this might be more max related question but I know here I can get answers fast. I started my project with 3dsmax 2012 and file size was 220 mb. At the middle of the project I switched to 3ds max 2015. I started wondering why my saves takes ages and checked the file size. It said 3.5 gb. Scene is not very complex but still the file size is horrible. I never had this kind of file sizes with 3dsmax 2012. Clearly something is filling my scene. I had similar problems with 3dsmax 2012 where I had to delete track view stuff cause it was flooding the file size. But 3dsmax 2015 shouldn't have the same problem. Can anyone help with this one?

It could be a lot of things really, what kind of objects do you have in the scene. (Railclone, forestpack, proxies, instanced stuff?) I use this: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/cleaner to clean my scenes.

I have a few buildings with interiors and a few detailed trees and multiscatters. That's basicly it. Normally these kind of scenes are 200-400 mb.
I guess 3dsmax 2015 cleanes trackviews automatically cause 3dsmax 2012 cleaning script won't work. Script says that all is clean.

Does that cleaner work for 3ds max 2015? There are 8 scripts. Do I have to download them all or one of them?

What is the status of the Compress on Save option in both version 2012 and 2015?

What happens if you save 2015-file to version 2012 then open it with Max 2012 and re-save it?
What is the size of the 2015-file if you delete everything from the scene?

What Sumary Info windows says when opening the same file in version 2012 and 2015?

8 versions, use the biggest numbered one.
I think it sounds like a 'compress on save' kind of difference tbh. thats about the ratio you get - a 100mb compressed file tends to be over 1gb uncompressed.

Which option is best? Compressed or not? I mean does it affect performance of the scene, or only when saving?

if you work from a network compressing can make it faster, makes it slower saving locally though. this includes autobacks, so if you have a local ssd it's better to leave it off so max doesnt keep hanging for an autoback.
I have had a compression fail/corrupt a file once too so i'm wary. only ever seen it once, but still.

If I save it to 2012 and re-save it in 2012 the file size stays the same.

I checked previous project that had alot more detailed trees and stuff. File size on that project is 640 mb. Clearly something is wrong in this scene. Should the script work if I just select run script and open the cleaner script. Nothing happens when I run the script. Or do I have to run it somehow differently.

I didn't have compression on. Not in 2012 and not in 2015.

I found out what was causing the big file size. It was a few objects that was causing it. I run the cleaner script but it didn't help and merging to new scene didn't help either. So it got to be some objects. By removing objects I found out the objects causing it. Now the file size is 600 mb.
