  • Sketch & toon like C4d

    hello,
while trying to get something looks good from vraytoon, most of the people told me to switch to C4D for the sketch and toon add on.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=sket...w=1536&bih=840
For sure, that look sincreadible compare to vraytoon.
Is there a way to get such good result our of max/vray?
If none, is the scene convertion from max/vray to C4D straight forward

    Thanks

You'll need custom materials too, toon just handles the edges and not the shading.

These might be a good starting point to make your own:

    http://www.vray-materials.de/all_materials.php?mat=1345

They're pretty straightforward. might be worth rendering in multiple passes too.

      Thanks,
I google it for sometime and never found anythiong good with vraytoon. SO I guess it is not the soft to make good looking NPR render.
I tried Piranesi, http://www.piranesi.co.uk/index.html, but is it too time consuming.

i dont think there are any really good npr's for max.. not compared to what ive seen from c4d.. there is illustrate, and also finaltoon, and liquid+/pencil+ and of course piranesi. but i get the impression all of them are quite dated now.

You can achieve the sketchy look by layering up a few different effects.
We did some small clips for this video to achieve a sketchy look.
Unfortunately only a few of our clips made it into the final cut but all the animation is using Max/VRay

As I recall I used some grimy maps in the Vray toon and sketchy textures using falloff (using shadow/light option to drive it)
A noise modifier was used on the geometry.
The toon grime, sketchy textures and noise modifier were all animated randomly on "twos" to approximate the look of hand drawn animation.

Nothing too fancy and the client's art direction dulled the final look a bit but it worked pretty well for a quick set-up.
Here are a few test images.
