  • difficulty to teach students the gamma 2.2 stuff with quick settings

    Hello !
I'm teaching Vray to my students, wich discovers the engine for first time.

By default Vray is setup with gamma 2,2 and color mapping set to "color mapping only". And, of course, the VFB have the srgb button checked by default.

In this case, result is good in VFB, but when they try to save pic, of course it's too dark.

So, i try to find a very simple way to setup vray AND deal ith gamma as wimple as possible.

That's why i tell them to unchek the srgb button in VFB, and choose "color mapping AND gamma" in color mapping section.
This time, no more gamma issues when saving render from vfb.

Here's my trouble... : to simplify, i ask them to open the vray quick settings, and click on "interior" settings to have a decent IM+LC setup.
BUT !!!! clicking the "interior" button switches back the gamma mode to "Color Mapping only".
And, again, we falls into a gamma issue...

Do you have a very simple procedure for very basic Vray setup dealing with gamma 2.2 and saving renders ???

They need to save it in at least 16 bit, I think. Saving as a JPEG, From the VFB, you'll have to save at at 2.2, default is 1.

This is odd. By default when saving to PNG/JPEG etc. files, 3ds Max should save them with proper gamma.

If you open the MaxScript listener and type
      Code:
      fileOutGamma
      what do you get?

This is wrong. If everything in V-Ray and 3ds Max is set by default, there is no need to do that.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

just tell them to save as exr. if it's too bright when they open it, do a .454, if it's too dark, 2.2. no data lost.
different software deals with them differently, so just saying 'compare the the render in the vfb and move it up or down to match' is pretty straightforward.

PSD Manager saves it as a 32bit PSD for me.

For some reason the default output gamma in max is 1 with max 2014. (not sure about 2015). Overriding the gamma when you save fixes this, or you can do the maxscript above. Should solve it.

Or even better, create a new max scene and set all the settings just how you want them and save that file in your /scenes/ default directory with the filename "MaxStart.max". Max will automatically load this file when it starts from then on.
