  • Vray 3 update

    So finally I could convince my boss to upgrade to Vray 3. I ´m about to install Vray 3 in the middle of some projects. I know this is usually not the very best idea, but we won´t have a timeframe without any projects intersecting in the near future. We currently have Vray 2.5. I think to remember the 2.5 build was made to have both versions installed
    side by side. Is this correct ? So could we finish projects with 2.5 while 3 is installed ? Are there any other things I should be aware of when upgrading ? Thank You !

    maybe I'm wrong but, as far as I know, you need two separate max installation/version in order to run two different v-ray release

      Like zeronove mentioned, it is not possible to have multiple V-Ray versions per 3DSMax instance.
      You may install it on different Max versions like the standard and Design one, or on 2014 and 2015 but not on the same Max instance.
      The only specific thing in version 2.5 is that it works with both V-Ray 2.x and 3.x licenses.

        We upgraded and so far everthing looks pretty good. There was just problem during installation. We are working on max 2014. We had Vray 2.5 installed and I ´m not sure how many other 2.x versions before. I uninstalled Vray 2.5 and installed vray 3. When starting max I got a lot of duplicate plugin id error messages. It seems that Vray 2 didn´t uninstall proberly
        I had to manually remove c:/program files/chaosgroup. Everything vray related in the max root and plugins folder. all those files were *2013.*** files btw. I also tried to to let the vray 3 insaller uninstall the previous version without success. So I had to remove these files manually on all machines. No big deal but I hope I deleted everything neccessary and there is nothing I forgot that could make trouble in the future.

          The V-Ray 3.x Installer usually removes all previous V-Ray versions without any issues.
          If for some reason it refuse to remove them and you got an error during the installation do the following:

          1.Uninstall the old version manually.

          2.Go to C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray and delete the following folders(if exist):
          "3dsmax 20** for x64" and "RT for 3ds Max 20**"

          3.Go to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 20** and delete all files which names starts with "vray"(if exist)

          4.Go to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 20**\plugins and delete "vrayplugins" folder and all files which starts with "vray"(if exist)

          5.Install the newer version.

            Those were exactly the files I deleted and everything is working fine. I just wanted to make sure there are no config or other files somewhere burried in the max tree i ´m not aware of. Thank You !
