  • Bloom and Glare: How do the mask parameters work?

    Hello,
I could not find any info on this in the help files, so I will ask here: What are the mask parameters in the lens effects for? I assume they apply the effects only to certain parts of the image, but I have no idea how this works. If I turn on the intensity checkbox for example, I get an additional render element which is black all over. Changing the value next to the checkbox doesn't help either. How is this supposed to work?

"Intensity - when this option is enabled, the bloom effect will be applied only around pixels that have a value larger than the number specified in the field to the right. "

It reads from the Lens effects source render element beleive. but its bugged atm

I've been messing with this recently and here's what I have found so far:

      1. It seems that as long as the effect is turned on before rendering even with no masking checked, it will default to affecting the entire image.

      2. If you turn both the effect on and turn on Object ID before rendering (assigned n Max's Object Properties), it works.

      3. I cannot get Material ID (assigned in the Material Editor) to work.

Perhaps Vlado could chime in here and shed some light...these are just things I have found through some testing here...

There are some bugs with the Mask functionality of the Lens Effects in version 3.x which have not been solved yet.
We are working on that matter and we will update this thread when we have some progress.

While on the topic of Bloom and Glare, how come when switched to "Render and element", I can't get just the highlight effects in it's own render. Maybe I'm going crazy but in past versions the bloom and glare element would only consist of the highlights that get added over the top. Now I get the whole image making it useless.

          Any thoughts?
          Cheers!
Best glare filter though, kicks so much ass to get streaked halo's.

As far as I remember the Lens Effects has always worked like that - the Bloom/Glare Effects are being applied on the entire image since not only the lights produce blooms and glares.
Why do you think it is useless? Blend RGB pass with the Bloom and Glare elements via Average operation and the resulting composition will match perfectly RGB(with lens effect applied in the VFB).

I will give it a try!
The reason being is, I want to render the glare but have the ability to crop things from the background and still have the glare not effected.

I feel pretty stupid now, works perfectly. Learn something new every day though! Will include in the next lesson.

For some reason I cant get it to work now...I'm applying it to the object ID on glass and turning the effect on it on the VFB.

Have you tried it on a bright object? Maybe the glass is too dark...

Please note that Lens effects are not working with Object and Material IDs in VFB at the moment, the issue is in our bug tracking system.
