  • Were there changes in how Irradiance map works?

    Hi all,

In the past, when I was using irr map with low subdivisions and the "medium" preset, I'd get splotches where surfaces are too close together. It made sense.
Now, and this is really good, I don't get splotches even when I use, say, 40/20 and the Medium preset.

    Did anything change?

    Thanks.
    Guido.

probably just your scene and the way you were lighting it, could even be materials or the hdri used.

Lightcache retracing is now on by default. That could very well be it. Other things that can prevent IR splotches in concave areas are detail enhancement and checking sample visibility. But both of these are off by default so they would help only if you enabled them by yourself.

        Hmm.
        Thanks.

I remember people recommending using 70 to 100 subdivs in interior scenes, about 10 years ago.
Whatever it is (lighting or retrace in LC) those numbers are way too high now.

I still use 140/70 for high res stills. still get blotches sometimes too if the hdri has too wide a range.
