  • Watertank Displacement

Not sure if this is the right forum to post it so I'm sorry in advance if its not.
I'm having a hard time with something that I thought to be easy but has me quite stumped. I'm trying to displace on object just on the top side (wave movement) without getting any artifacts. (check image)
When I use a low amount of displacement the effects work but when I want to go for a rougher surface it seems like the edges on the side don't want to/or can't displace correctly. When using multiple clipper objects I can get around this problem at least in this example but in the end I would have to do a circular shape. So I'm trying to get it displaced cleanly without any "trickery".

Oh forgot to mention its supposed to be for an animation. With selfmade displacement maps.

Would it be possible to attach the scene or send it to support@chaosgroup.com so we could have a look?

Zdravko sure I can upload the scene but I'm not saying the problem lies with vray. In fact I think vray is doing everything correctly. Its just that my method is wrong. So I was asking if somebody else had done something similar and might have a solution.

*edit* I attached the scene. (max 2015) As of right now I'm using the displace modifier instead of rendertime displacement because it seems to work, but I would have liked to use rendertime displacement, so I wouldn't have to work with heavy geo. And maybe could have used vector displacement.

*edit2* Oddly enough it doesn't seem to notice changes within the phoenix ocean displacement map. When I move the timeslider and render at different frames.

        Hi,

To get a quality shape using maps to control the displacement in all directions would be a difficult task. You can get very good results if you apply V-Ray displacement on a simple surface like this:

Size:	127.0 KB

Otherwise you have to assign different IDs on the top and bottom part of the geo and prepare different shaders in a multisub object material. And then there is an option in the displacement properties to Use object mtl. But even with this workslow you will get some unwanted edges or deformations.

I assume that you want to create a water object with hidden container?
The other method you have mentioned is the Max native Displace modifier :

Size:	192.6 KB
ID:	856030
Then you can export the model and animation to Proxy.

*edit2* Oddly enough it doesn't seem to notice changes within the phoenix ocean displacement map. When I move the timeslider and render at different frames.
It should work. The animation should be visible even in the material editor preview sample. What is your Phoenix and V-Ray version ?

Indeed. Since I have to model some kind of glass tunnel through the "water" and need to cut out parts of the watervolume in order to have no problems with refractions etc. I didn't want to to overload my geometry more than I have to. But since the displace modifier gave me good results pretty quickly I just have to bite the bullet on that one.

The animation is visible in the material preview slot but it is not recognized by the displace modifier.

Vray Version 3.10.03 Phoenix: 2.2.0. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I don't have the phoenix license on me at the moment. We have two vray dongles. One with vray and phoenix and another one with just Vray. I'm currently using the one with just the vray license on it.

The Phoenix ocean texture is part of a Falloff and Composite maps. Can you try to put only the Phoenix map into the Displace map slot?
            This works for me.

Thanks for the pointer. If the oceantexture is directly is the mapslot for the displace modifier the animation works.
