  • Upgrade path from my Mini - rendering farm

    Hi all,
    I have 5 machines with socket 2011 for my mini rendering farm. They have i7 4930k @ 4.2ghz + 32GB ram each.
I am getting quite a lot of work and i want to invest a bit but I am running out of space.
My thought was to upgrade one or two machines to dual xeon + socket 2011v3 the ones with 14 + cores.
That will be a considerable expense since i can only keep graphic cards and SSDs ...
Will i see a good improvement with vray if a get a machine like that?
    is it as straight forward as saying 4.2ghz x 6 cores x 5 machines = 126 ghz
    and 3ghz x 28 cores x 2 machines = 168ghz + 75.6 from my 3 old ones?
Will i see 100% improvement or there are other obstacles that i don't know about ?

Roughly speaking yes, they will be that fast. They will also be that much more expensive! I used to have the same config like you do. But over time I've migrated to all xeons, for how much space they take and how many cores they have and cpus can fit, its a much better investment.

I went as far as buying refurbished 1u servers which had twin nodes with 2 cpus in each so 4 cpus in one 1u server totaling 24 cores. The way they are setup is really great only one powersupply, but its shared between two machines.

Only draw back they run hot and loud so you must have cold space and isolated (not in your home or near your computer sorta thing.)

      Thank you Dmitri ,

Good to know. They are quite expensive for the amount of improvement. I will have a look at used 1u servers i guess whoever updates to 2011v3 will have to sell the old ones ! I have to say that my five machines with liquid cooling one next to the other are really loud ! Headphones is a must !
      Thank you again.

i got myself some dell 720 poweredge servers, 2U with 2 processors.
they are silent, run at low frequency when not in use. and even at 100% noise is OK.
The servers are located in a cool basement, temperature varies between 14 and 19 degrees all the year. So no special cooling.
But of course, they where quite expensive (even if i got some good deal).
After one year of use, i was able to get more work done, stills and animations, so no regrets !

Yeah its kinda hard to justify such purchase upfront, but doing this now for over 8 years I know it will be ok
