  • Reflection issue on glass dome

I'm having an issue with a nice studio reflection on a logo. The face of the logo has a glass dome, similar to the shape of a contact lens.

The first image I tried using a Vray plane at 45º in order to create a nice highlight. The issue is that it makes a straight line across the logo, even though the glass is convex. I don't get why that is.
The second image I tried to fake it by creating a circle with LightMtl applied, also at 45º overhead. That gets me closer, but now there's a weird square shape on each right and left edges. Don't know why that is.
Last image is my (2D vector image) reference which is partially accurate in that the reflection should not go over top of the metal like it does.

Any pointers would help greatly. Should I be looking at something like HDR Studio for better lighting?

For the reflection to be accurate as your reference you must angle your camera to produce curve on the reflection. Having it dead on will make it straight - the renderer does not lie

To fake the curvature like in the ref just make a bent plane for the reflection and place it in front of the logo (if you cant rotate your camera).

The closer you are to the center point of the "lense" the straighter your reflection gets. (if the object/light you reflect is straight and your camera is straight on)
But you should be able to achieve your effect with a circle light. At least in my quick test it got pretty close.

A "circle light" as in a circle with LightMtl applied to it?

Ah sorry for not being clear on this one. I was using vray 3.0 and chose "disc" shape for my vray light. But a cylinder/circle with vraylight material should work too
          Cheers,
          Oliver

Yet, another excellent reason to upgrade!

So I "get" the part about angling the camera at the surface. But even with my make-shift circular light, I'm still getting those strange pesky squares where it seems like it ought to be a nice smooth edge. See attached.

Turns out that the poly count on the glass dome was too low. I created another one with higher polys and that seemed to have done the trick!
