Is there a way to exclude objects from something that's using LightMtl as a light source, much like you can exclude objects from a Vray light?

Sure. Just create a circle spline convert it to editable poly and make it a mesh light.

Scroll down in your modifier panel with the light selected and find the pick mesh button
Select the previously created mesh (in your case the circular object)
