under the global switch there is a sub-category for materials. there is a check box for reflection/refraction. does this turn on and off all reflections for the materials in a scene? ...or does it only work with vray materials.

before i get a RTFM, i don't see anythign on 'global switches' in the manual.

i am trying to kill all of my reflections on materials to speed up the calculations of my irradiance maps. i primarily use standard materials.

    thanks for any help.

i somewhat answered my own question. i can turn off enable raytracing under the raytrace engine tab in the render scene dialog box. that globally turns off my reflections so they will not be calcuilated into the irradiance map.

...but i still don't know what the global switched actually control.

In the help file click on render parameters then global switches. It's all there. If for some reason you still can't find it the process of elimination would be best to understand them.
