  • Controling DOF

Is there a way to control the amount of DOF in the render without having to use the f-number that will also change lighting and such. It would be great for us to have an override of some sort to control DOF alone without changing anything else. Seems a lot of us just use the corrections control in the frame buffer in the VFB, so we don't want to change the lighting to get our DOF right where we want it.

I use an EV chart. So, when I change the F number it will tell me the shutter speed number to keep the same exposure.

Thanks glorybound, that's one way. But it would be much easier especially for animation if we can adjust it on the fly without having to worry about adjusting other settings for other issues. A simple override checkbox with a settings option would make a world of difference and shouldn't be that complicated to put in. The best I've seen yet for DOF has come from Octane, it has separate focus setting that doesn't change anything else in the scene and it even has a eyedropper to choose what objects in the interactive render to focus on. If vray could implement some type of system like that, the workflow would be much greater.

Why not just use a regular camera and control the DOF in the renderer settings?

Well that might be a workaround, but vray physical cam does have some nice features I would like to use. Also I'm using rt for all my renders, and rt doesn't support Dof if it isn't used with vray physical camera.

That workaround doesn't seem to work to good with the workflow. The renderings from interactive BR+BR compared to the production renders with BR+LC differ quite a lot. The final render just doesn't look right no matter how I adjust it. Plus not having the exposure makes the render take forever. This doesn't seem like a good workaround, and I was hoping for a solution or actual fix than a workaround. like I said implementing a checkbox with a slider to override the DOF control from f-number would be great, also doesn't seem to be hard to incorporate code is already in place for the f-number.

If you use the Physical Camera in 3ds Max 2016, you get all that. By default it allows you to adjust DOF separately from exposure.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Okay Vlado I tried 2016 with the physical camera, but I'm having one major issue, the rendering from interactive with BR+BR does not match the production BR+LC, I'm getting different lighting and color tone. It's making it really hard to set up a scene.

Ok, this one is odd and might be a bug. Can you get me a scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com ?

Lets have this conversation in this thread since I stated the issue there, and this thread is about the physical camera.
