Just to add to this little discussion...

I am running XP on a dual Xeon 2.6 using a Tyan S2668 Tiger i7505 motherboard. Rendering an animation with HT enabled resulted in Vray consistently crashing after about 100 frames. I have since disabled HT and have not tried it again but wonder what benefits of HT I am losing when rendering still frames??

Can anyone shed light on what benefits Hyper threading adds to Vray?

Some tests done when HT first came out put at 20% increase in speed.

just to add more to the pot

on stills HT has worked flawlessly for ages on our dell dual 2.8 xeons (512k cache) with HT on, however its just started erroring on an animation which we're chucking at it. We get a hang when its building the scene if we use back burner, and it just crashes max if we render directly on the machine...

we only got 1000 frames out over night, and during today we only could get 1-200. Yesterday it crashed after 7.

turning HT off now, will report back....seems a shame but we need stability is better than baby sitting as the final render will take between 100-150 hours and we dont fancy sleepless nights

well "HT off" is definately the fix to the problem, our animation rendered fine.

also, we were having the most peculiar errors on some of the frames, where actual chunks of the model had dissapeared...it was like every now and then someone had booleaned a cube/rectangle out of the model, it went through groups and everything ! (nice effect, but not wanted )...it appeared randomly in random places and random sizes...after HT was turned off this also dissapeared.

using 5.1 and version N...win xp pro

dell dual xeon 2.8gb 512k cache 1gb ram, no other software loaded.
