  • Bloom and Glare fx

    Hi All,

Wondering what everyone uses for there bloom and glare effects...ie vray,ps or a comp program like nuke?

I have been trying to get the VFB in vray working with bloom and glare but I have to say I have not had any luck with it. Are there any good tutorials on the setup?

    Thanks
    Alex
    Cheers

I mainly use PS for this. I might start using it if I find out a way to save just the lens effects as a separate image/pass. Is this possible?

For interiors it works great, however I struggle with exterior. I did a cabin interior using it and it was awesome. I have also used Looks, which works in 32bit, was as also great.

Do you apply it to the lights in the scene or is it object based with ID's?

I use the VFB; nothing with ID's. I utilize the mask, so only the bright areas are used.

I am trying to use the vfb as well. I guess I just dont understand what or how to use the mask. Is the mask object specific? or do I need to setup a pass for it?
            Cheers

the mask works in float, I think. I set it to 3. Anything over 3, the glare/bloom is applied to.

We got this a couple months ago for an animation with a lot of sunrise/sunset glints off glass & metal. - https://www.videocopilot.net/products/opticalflares/

I love it and will never use anything else from now on.

yeah - what we've been doing is loading the specular, reflection and base exr's into AE and exporting a few different flare setups/options over black back into the render folder for laying over in fusion.
We've been doing a sun flare from the base, a specular track, and small glints from the reflection. It tracks color, size & position from the base frame automatically so now we just copy and paste the same effects onto the appropriate frames for each shot, alter the brightness if it needs it and press export. Helps keep them consistent, there are 40 odd shots.

Give frishluft a look too - really natural looking flares and glows, you probably already use their depth of field.

probably overkill for still, wouldn't you say?

Depends how you do your stills. We usually shrink down images of lens flares and manually copy anywhere from a hundred to a thousand around our still images.
