  • Where is 3dsmax leading too?

    Hello Chaosgroup team,
All the news from Autodesk since they took over Maya tends to prove that 3dsmax will be devoted to game and not anymore to archviz.
As an Autodesk partner, you probably should be aware about the future of such software.
Will be good to share with us, because if we need to shift to other software, better to know it sooner than later.

    Thanks

I don't think you'll get anything besides what Autodesk has officially said/announced. If Chaos Group has any information you can be sure there is an NDA in place to prevent them from talking about it.
    Cheers,
    Oliver

I don't see this being the case at all.

Yeah they told me max was going to be discontinued.

No seriously, this talk has been going around for few years now. Realistically it won't happen. Not like they will remove tools that make max good at archviz or other tasks, why would they. Maya sucks every new version is worse and worse, I fear its max that's getting better Actually I take it back both are terrible

I don't understand any more why this comes up every year. I don't see 3Ds Max getting see EOL coming any time soon. There are still people using Softimage after EOL. Even if you'd have to shift to another piece of software it's not like you have a week to do so, if you wanted you could take 2 years or as long as you wanted.

The installed base for arch viz is so massive AD would be nuts to mess with, imho. Even though we're seeing AD push Revit more and more, arch viz is a totally different beast. The tools we need/use, the type of work we do... To dismiss this crowd would be a huge mistake.
Fear not. Max just turned 25 today (yes!), and it's not going anywhere for the forseeable future.

3dsmax outsells maya about 11 to 1, the market for it is huge and it's the cash cow of the 3d apps for autodesk. Won't be going anywhere soon, the subscription / licensing model is a pain in the ass though.

Yep - there's been plenty of nothingy versions of max, I'm only now moving to 2016 in work. I'd hazard that plus some plugins would be totally fine for me to carry out 95% of my work so if I had to keep paying once I'd gone past the purchase cost of the software I'd be quite annoyed.

same with maya, they keep making "rewrite" versions which totally breaks everything too. Like maya 2016 is just out, as is very buggy, now there is already talk about 2017, so what all of a sudden 2016 is old news? what about bug fixes and sp? Maya 2015 is up to sp6 and still is so bad on bugs. Charging money for such software releases imo is next to stealing. When software bugs out in production and costs you time and your own money when you already paid for it - and of course Autodesk will never care about your problems, its a one sided relationship

We see render engines pop out of the woodwork, I wonder why we don't see any new MAX replacement being developed?

Yeah, if you go through this thread it looks that Maya is a world of pain and that 3ds Max users should not complain too much: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthre...05#post8106505 And then you have another similar thread about dealing with Xgen.

Modo started development more than 10 years ago. Look where it is today and you may guess part of the answer. It will take many years until any new platform even begins to approach 3ds Max in terms of stability, functionality and performance.

                            Best regards,

Max was still pretty crappy after 10 years too. I was good but development was still flaky.

Sometimes I wonder if our expectations are too high?
