  • Pencil gradient material?

Please see attached example picture of lever.
I have to make a similar look to use on some section-cut mechanical parts.

Can this hand-done, pencil gradient shading be achieved straight from max2014+vray2.5?

I've have been trying Vraydirt, so far however, the cut surface in my model doesn't really touch anything, and it's just a flat plane,
so it does not get any dirt, just stays all white. Also, it seems RT does not show Vraydirt in latest stable build.
I've tried making dummy objects that don't render, and it helped a bit, but was not a solution as it is adding a lot of time to the long term budget...
Does anyone owning Richdirt know if it will do this effect?
    Thanks in advance!

The easiest way I can think of is to use a falloff map set to Z-axis combined with VRayToon. No plugins needed.

Maybe my model is odd, but I am only getting pure black, no gradient, no white, no grey... : (
I'll try something else if I can't get this to work.

Okay I got it to work...seems it does not work in my case. Only must show on a few totally flat surfaces. It just shows as white. curved objects seem to work fine, but unfortunately, no curved surface in this one.

Need the effect to work on all types of surfaces, mostly flat ones.
          Thanks again

              no time budgeted for making
extra geo, but thanks...client has changed course anyway, but still interested in being able to accomplish the look on flat geometry...
