From what I'm reading here I'm glad I didn't jump the gun on this.

Oh and other major issue we are having is related to Wacom drivers strangely.

Open Max 2014, Add a Render Element (any renderer) and it will crash. Unplug your wacom and it won't crash, I had to uninstall my wacom drivers to stop it crashing.... very very strange.

Thats the main problem I had/have with Winblows 8.1 and 10. Other than that everything else works or fails as expected

You may have to download new drives for the WIBU key.

The start menu gets rid of the sub-folder so when searching anything vray related you get Launch VRay DR Spawner, Launch VRay DR Spawner, Launch VRay DR Spawner, all listed together and you can't tell if it's for max 2014,2015 or 2016 which isn't really that useful.

I run Win 10 on my Surface and don't have any issues. As for the free thing, you don't have to pay for it after the year has passed if you update before the time limit. It's not a case of you having used it for a while and they suddenly charging you. In fact more likely, when the year is up they will announce it will remain free forever. How do they make money? Well, the truth is they never really made that much money on sales to consumers to begin with. Most people either got their license with a computer, or they pirated it. What they do make money on, and will continue to, is to license out to OEMs and businesses. Also, they are going harder in with the windows store, hoping that the microtransactions will be equal to, or more than the money they earned from consumers before.

As for the start menu thing, Classic Start Menu still fixes all the issues you might have. (the start menu folders are still there, just hidden) You might also want to (as I did day 1) disable automatic windows updates since it defaults to automatic now.
The main differences in upgrading to Windows 10 is the new DirectX system, which has the potential to make a big difference. 3ds Max has usually been pretty quick at taking advantage of Direct3D so I expect we will see some performance improvements soon. There are some other nice updates too, but nothing that is absolutely necessary.
