  • What is the best practice to take advantage of the DMC improvements ?

It's been a long time I've not modified my presets, basically IM/LC, ad

I'm trying the new SP3 and with the news settings, my rendertimes are trough the roof and the sample rate pass shows huge red zones on glossy materials. Furthermore, the final images are grainier than before.

    My 'all around' presets :

    Code:
    AA adaptative
MSR 1 in old projects to 3 or 6 in new ones (never understood this one)
    no image filter

    AA
    subdiv 1/16
Color thresold 0,02 for drafts - 0,01 for final

    DMC
    Min samples 128
    Adaptative amount 0,75
    Noise 0,01

    Color Mapping
    Reihnard 0,3 burn
    Subpixel on

    Irradiance Map -7/-2 subdiv 100
This does work only if I can control the subdiv of my lights (cant take advantage of the "new" global subdiv)

I want to start new presets from scratch but I'm somehow confused by the defaults. Are they a good base to start with ? (I thought that image filters were not adivsed and lancosz is on by default?)

I read that I should start with the noise thresold (AA noise thresold? or DMC noise thresold ?) on 1 and start lowering it until I reach a acceptable noise/render time ratio ?

    Thanks for your help !

I guess I should have read the "Cheatsheet: How to get a Cleaner image with SP3" before

      ahah, yeah.
Yet, i hear you, I personally disseminated the info a bit too much (boy, was it not quite the surprising experience for me to witness a release from the other side...), and are in sore need of a LOCKED post or two as reference.
The Lanczos filter implemented in V-Ray lacks the negative component, so it doesn't sharpen, yet is able to preserve fine detail very well (yeah, you could search the forums for roughly this exact bit of text, somewhere else, from Vlado or Me, or Tech Support. But really, what are stickies for, and who really uses forum search?).

I'll do what i do best, and bug the heck out of anyone (which hasn't got to do with what i'd need, likely.), see what happens.

        Or the help file

My rule of thumb is when I stumble upon a VraySomething new feature, it's probably worth a try, but I've been told a long ago to stay away from filters.

Thanks for the explanation ! For the rest I'll refer to you very helpful cheat sheet list (which could be a intresting cheat matrix with the noise thresold in Y and the max subdiv in X, to help us get out of the dark corners where we are stuck and search for the noisless light)
