  • VRay 3.3 default setting compared to 3.2

    Hi,

I just installed 3.3 on one machine and it was all successful.
Now I opened a scene saved in 3.2 the usual new features etc warnings appear, all still fine.

I digged a bit in the render settings to see what changed and I noticed (Using the adaptive sampler) the Min Shading Rate jumped from 1 to 6.
Now is this a "bug" or intended behaviour with the new sampling method?

Just noticed this in the help:

Values are typically between 6 to 16, although the default value should work fine for the majority of scenes.

So 6 seems the new default then.

It is worth experimenting with min shading rate in 3.3. I have a couple scenes that are about ~30% faster with min shading at 3 vs. 6 .

The default settings have been updated in version 3.30.03 so the default value for MSR parameter is now 6.

This topic has been also discussed here, so it might be a good idea to check it out:

Deceasing MSR is most of the cases speeds up the render but it will also affect the quality of the image negatively.
Like all the settings, this seems to be rather content dependent. In our case a photo real CG vehicle rendered to be inserted into a live action scene had no perceptible quality difference between MSR 12 and MSR 4 (or 6 or 8 ) in direct A/B comparison. A white architectural wall would likely be a different story.

Generally, there will be no change in quality regardless of what MSR value you choose, provided that you have enough AA samples to make up for that. The only difference might be the time it takes to a reach given noise threshold. The default value of 6 is optimal in many cases.
