  • global illumination and bump mapping

    Hi all,

Maybe someone knows a workaround for my problem.

I have a wooden elevation and i use bump mapping to give the boards more depth.
    see image.

When i render this with scanline all lines are visible when i render it with vray with gi on i get the following result

Does anybody know what settings to use to get all the lines visible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Erik

this looks interesting, could move the camera a bit and see how is it changing? Interesting because all other places the lines are good ,and visible.

        Gael,

increasing anti aliasing settings worked, i changed the settings from default -1,2 to 0,2 and know all the lines are visible.

        Thanks,

        Erik

Eric - did it increase your render times by much by changing the antialiasing settings?

On a render that was 20 minutes it gave an increase of about 5 minutes, but my scene is not very complicated. I think it can increase your rendertimes alot if you have a lot of detail in your scene, but you get a better looking render.

i am using the brick material as a bump map i dont't think i can sharpen that. But then i don't need to sharpen it because the antialiasing settings work great for me.

in the bitmap settings you can change the value for blur to for example 0.2.

sometimes this is a good way to avoid "bump gi-errors".

try it, maybe you can save a little bit of time!

Well i tried it just now and i must say it did nothing for my vertical lines but my horizontal bump lines have improved a lot.

                    Thanks for the tip.

try to use displacement instead of a bump

i really don't want to use displacement because it uses more ram and produces higher render times, also i would have to deal with detaching faces and so on. but before the useful tip of the antialiasing increase i was considering to switch to displacment.
