  • Varnished wood material question

I've got a material that I'm trying to replicate. I already have a high resolution scan of the wood material, but what I'm not sure is how to replicate the areas in wood where the varnish didn't adhere, revealing "non-reflective" areas in the wood, particularly the denser areas where the varnish doesn't soak in.

I'm thinking that I would use a Blend for this and perhaps some VRay dirt? Any help to get me started would be appreciated.

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly but why not just use a reflection bitmap?

Thanks for that. Perhaps I'm trying to make it more difficult than it is. So for the reflection map, I ran a high-pass filter on it, a levels adjustment to increase the contrast a bit and saved out to B&W. Is that what you would recommend? I think it looks a lot closer to what I wanted, but I'm finding that I need to add some Highlight Glossiness to it as well. Interesting.

That is indeed more or less what I would do. Sometimes the best solutions are the easiest. You could've done it with a blend map also but you would've needed that map anyway. You can also add an extra layer of reflection or dirt (smudges,..) with the blend map now.
