  • Different displacement look with 3.30.04 nightly stable

I installed 3.30.04 (the stable nightly build) on one of the workstations to test it (because of the reportedly fixed VFB hangs). So far I haven't noticed any hanging but I noticed that the reflections on the displaced water surface in one of our current projects looks different than with 3.30.03. Please see the GIF below. Nothing in the scene or render settings was touched, just installed different Vray versions and I hit render.

Why does it look different and is it more correct with 3.30.04?

    Hi Alex,

The reason for this render difference most probably comes from the changes we made in the displacement node for the latest nightly builds. Actually I can't be sure without testing the scene file.
You can send us only the displaced mesh (is that Phoenix ocean?) to support@chaosgroup.com

Thanks for the info. No need to send a scene I think. We'll continue with 3.30.03 until the end of the project and install 3.30.04 after that.

I'm not sure I understand your question. I'm working on a seascape scene if that's what you're asking.

The difference occurs because of a modification that we did to avoid dark edges when using rounded corners on reflective materials in 3.30.04

          Best regards,

Hmm.. There's no rounded corners on the displaced object. Or you mean the modification affects all reflective objects no matter if rounded corners are used or not? So is the rendered result still correct in terms of realism? No need of any adjustment to the material and object if we move to 3.30.04?

The modification is in the VRayMtl material, not in the rounded corners as such. See this thread:

              and also the attached images:

As you can see the modified material produces more pleasing results in general.
