  • sun shadow bias.

the default sun shadow bias is ridiculous. when i work in metres, its set to 0.2 metres by default.. this means any objects smaller than 20cm across get screwed up shadows.

its caught me out any number of times.. start work on a new scene.. first renders look strangely crap.. finally lightbulb hits and i set the bias to a more reasonable 1mm.

why is it set so high by default?

I suspect it's majority rules to be honest. There are a lot of people who work in meters like yourself however there's potentially more who work in mm or cm or even inches (max default). 0.2 at these units is much more reasonable.

Might be an idea that the shadow bias default be set to a specific unit say 2mm rather than 0.2 of your system units? Over the years though I've just got used to setting it to 2mm whenever i setup a new light.

if i was working in a scene in mm, it would be a small scene, f.e a tabletop product or a piece of jewellery. i would still find 0.2 scene units too high. granted it would generally not be so ridiculous, but if i was working on an earring, it would be just as silly as 0.2 scene units in an architectural scene.

since turning the bias down much lower has no negative effects i have noticed, setting it to less than 0.01 scene units by default would be a good idea imho.
