    Hi all

    Couple of questions

    Firstly, I posted a couple of months ago ago texture baking displacement in 3dsmax and vray. Currently you can only do it in vray RT, however even this implementation is not great as sometimes the render will stall after the first pass and it takes a long time. Ive seen this recently

    So if Maya supports texture baking displacement how long until 3ds max vray will?


    Second question. I've also read that Maya support baking GI lighting etc into vertex colours. Does 3dsmax support this, if so how?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi Will,

    Implementing support for displaced geometry when baking textures in 3DS Max is a planned feature and currently on our queue.
    As for the baking vertex colors, I'm not sure what's the state of this implementation have to check.

      Is there any update or nightly I could use for this feature. Its a real pain for us at the moment and holding back a project so anything to help would be great.

        Which one? V-Ray RT can do baking of displaced meshes and maybe you can use that.

          Hi Vlado

          We are looking for it in normal Vray, not RT. I did get it working in RT on test geometry but on final geometry RT seemed to never get past the first iteration when we turned on displacement. So as an example a standard Vrat RT render with and without displacement worked fine. A texture bake in vray RT without displacement worked fine and took about 20 seconds. However a texture bake with displacement in Vray RT, same settings as all other renders, I left for over 20 minutes and didnt get any improvement in the image. Im not sure what the issue is.

            Hm, can you try turning off the "view-dependent" option for the displacement and then set some suitable value for the "edge length"? It can be that V-Ray RT is trying to subdivide the mesh to some insane amount.
