  • Lens Effect (Bloom)

    Hi!

I wanted to know how some of you have been getting the bloom effect in windows for interior renderings. I used to use the Lens Effect (Bloom) via the VFB and loved it! is was super easy, but the mask had been broken almost since Vray 3 came out.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

I tend to use photoshop for this instead of vray, it's jsut more flexible. Only works if you render HDR though.
    Software:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
    3ds Max 2016 SP4
    V-Ray Adv 3.60.04

    Hardware:
    Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (4096MB RAM)
    64GB RAM

Do you create a render element or something to get the mask? I think I will be doing this in PS but not sure were to start.

Would you mind explaining a little bit on how to go about this?

If you comp your images in 8 bit I would go about it the following way:

        1) finish your comp as usual
        2) Use the color range selection tool and set it to white (255) with zero tolerance.
        3) Fill the selection with white
        4) Use a layer style to add glow

        That is for glare.

For Bloom I tend ti just use a bug round soft brush on a layer with "Linear Dodge" and draw around the brigh areas of the image.

If you want to use the bloom pass from VRay try adding it on top with the blendmode "Soft Light" and see where it gets you.

Alternative to step 2 you can use the appropriate mask.

Thanks! I comp in 32bit HDR would the process be the same?

Since the color range won't work in 32 bit you'd have to go another way.
Basically all you need is a layer where the areas above1.0 brightness are filled with white. Then add some glow to that.
Since I don't comp in 32bit (in Photoshop that is) I don't know what the smartest way of obtaining such a selection would be.
You can always temporarily bake down to 8 to make the selection though.
