  • Achieving depth of field without changing camera values

is this possible in vray without a render element? usually i have cameras all setup and i don't want to go in and change the aperture to have to again balance the light, would love to be able to increase DOF without changing the actual camera values to increase how blurry i want the object that is out of focus

thanks for this Bobby, i knew about this one but sometimes i just go right to my own camera and take a shot and use the actually values but i would stil love to be able to override this and not change the camera values i currently have set just play with the DOF ( as in corona for example)

You can always use your ZDepth pass, but I'm sure you are aware of that, too.

yeah i can but the zdepth pass is never the same as actual using it in the beauty pass, when its used without a pass then it affects the object in a more accurate way i would say and its also less composting in the end, i mostly use the zdepth pass these days for fog in the end if i need it or something similar, i have exhausted all the ways i know so i guess i have to play with the camera values in the end but would be nice to have this feature to add eay and fast DOF or would be nice to play with it in the VFB as this for easy tweaking

are you using the new physical camera?

you can set it to ignore per-camera exposure in the exposure control settings tab. and then adjust local fstop for your dof blur.

you may also be able to set local camera to a target ev and then adjust fstop.

you may need to play around a little bit. I'm normally doing it the opposite way, but i did do it recently and worked pretty well.

i was just gonna suggest that...EV is the right spinner to use....or general exposure settings - works great and you can forget about the conversion tables

i guess that's all in max 2016, thinking about switching over but i haven't seen any real benefits and with first tests, from before max 2016 seemed to be much slower with large scenes than 2015

i think 2016 is slightly better than 2015. mostly the layer manager makes a bit more sense.

but I'd probably wait and see how 2017 is.

Another option is to use DOF under the V-Ray Camera Rollout in combination with Standard Cameras and V-Ray Exposure Control:

Yeap, V-Ray has so many options so it is easy to forget the ones used not so often.
