I would have exported everything to a new scene. First lights, to test with some dummy objects. Then the rest of the objects piece by piece while test-rendering. At some point you should see where the time gets added significantly, so you would know where to look.

id do the torches with omnis, with no shadow casting, and "far attenuation" set so they only illuminate the wall geometry behind them. that will be the least cpu intensive way to get extra light in there..
if, as you say, there are rooms that are not visited by the camera, stick an omni in there, not an area light.
