  • texture question

    Hey guys,

If I have a texture that is used multiple times in a scene my understanding is that VRay will "instance" that texture i.e. only load it into memory once. Is this also the case if the texture has been used multiple times but isn't instanced (so loaded into various bitmaps, at various scales, etc)? Does VRay still recognise that it is grabbing the same texture and instance it accoringly, rather than loading them all into ram?

I hope my question makes sense.

I think it makes sense, but I have a feeling (although not a certainty) that it does not instance it, it would treat it as a brand new map.I think you can go through the log and check it out (see what VRay is loading). I'll test it out when I have a moment and I can give you a more positive answer, if someone from Chaos does not before me.

      Hello,

If we are talking about the same image file loaded through multiple copies of VRayHDRI texmap - then yes V-Ray internally loads the file only once.
If you are using the Max Bitmap texture - it is up to it to do instancing.

That is for the V-Ray Adv. renderer. The V-Ray RT renderer exports both VRayHDRI and the Max Bitmap to the same plugins that internally load the same file only once.

      Best regards,
