  • Nozon volumetric VR

    http://www.awn.com/news/nozon-chaos-...ut-game-engine

Didn't find anything on the forum so thought I might post this here. This looks incredible but I wonder what kind of output this would be? Would this be viewable on a smartphone for instance?

How the hell does that even work? Is this the same sort of tech I heard about being used in the 2012 Spiderman movie for room interiors in background buildings?

You can download the demo on steam right now and try it out if you have a vr headset.

Hopefully we can find out more on the 26th about how / when / how much $ etc.

I'm guessing but I suspect it will have very high render times that is based on how large an 'area' you want to be able to move inside of. Because I suspect it is rendering multiple camera views inside of that volume of space and re-projecting the in-between areas.

If this is the case, vlado can probably cleverly make use of an animation flythrough style 'use camera path' pre pass option to speed up the rendering quite a lot.

Maybe vlado will chime in about how it works if he isnt under NDA, and also give me beta access :P

seems to be the same tech as discussed here:

        http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...merge-VR-syste

i note that in that thread Vlado gave no hint of involvement in such a project, just the *possibility* of a collaboration. tbh he didnt even seem particularly interested, considering the tech looks killer. :P

mysterious! maybe this demo has come about since then.

"[...] However we are open to cooperation with other companies that do, like Nozon and Lytro."
          From your link.
Thing is, Nozon was already at EUE a year ago presenting VR done with us, so where was the big secret?

I really hope that volumetric lightfield rendering like this will just come to VRay, without shelling out another 10s of Ks of $s ...

This looks promising. But when PresenZ was first released on Steam as a demo I had a lot of problems viewing it. Crashing, etc. But I love this idea 100x more than rendering static stereo panos...

Their demos looks really good, very similar to a Vive experience in that the environment 'stays still' when you move around your head. This makes a big difference in terms of immersion.

However, the existing zone seems hard coded to a limit of a 3 feet square zone with about 1.5 feet vertically. It is meant to give a room experience sitting down. Definitely an improvement over a regular 360 pano but it would be great if it could have at least a 10 foot moving area. I've only tested with Rift but from what I understand there have been tech demos with larger zones using Vive. The files gets very larger and you need their player.

It needs a lot of ram too, 12gb to run.

Presenz demo and vray looks very cool,
but how do you move freely lets say on a tablet?
"so you can view with a group" or is this only
for one person with a head mounted device?

From what I was told, the parallax support is quite GPU-intensive and is only supported on desktops right. For phones and tablets, the data will be converted to a standard 360 stereo view.

                              Best regards,
                              Vlado
