  • Vray HDRImap

I am working on changing a simple arch vis that I originally completed as a sunny day scene (vray sun and sky) into a sunset/dusk scene. I am using an hdri map in a vray dome light texture slot to replace the vray sky.

I am new to this technique but have referenced some good tutorials (viscorbel) and I seem to be getting the results I hoped for. I have a couple of questions.

The hdri map I am using is from HRI Skies and it shows a gamma of 1.0 when viewed from mat editor and sampled/right clicked on to show properties/image info. I am using the vray/max linear work flow set up. My question - In the Vray HRDI map parameters in the mat editor is a Color space section. The default Type seems to be "Inverse gamma" with additional drop down choices of "None", "sRGB" and " From3DSMax". Should I be using the "From 3DS Max" option or ....?

Second question, not really vray specific. I will need to change the background photo, I don't want to have to re-shoot the scene at dusk and I'm seeking advice on good technique for transforming photo to better simulate the dusk time of early evening. I did shoot the photo in camera raw so my thinking is to simple lower the exposure value but I'm curious if anyone has additional techniques that would be recommended.

Daylight scene that I'm trying to change to dusk/early ever is shown below. thanks in advance for any help.

For the dusk shot, ditch the vray sun and buy one of peter guthrie's dusk hdris inside your dome light!

Thanks for your reply! I have turned off the vray sun, didn't seem to be needed. I'm using an hdri sunset map from hdri skies for this test but will definitely check out the hdri you recommend.

In the mat editor I'm using Color Space>From 3ds Max for the hdri map and that seems to be the "most correct" but I am still uncertain if that is the correct setting.

      Thanks again.

HDRI maps usually doesn't require gamma corrections so Color Space either From 3dsMax or Inverse Gamma=1 should be fine.
