  • Cebas won the race to Maya-land...

It´s official!! Finalrender stage-2 for Maya 6 is announced.

Cebas says it will be available in Q1 2005 but will be shown at Siggraph.

Maybe Chaous Group can beat them if they get 1.5 out soon and get busy with the Maya port. Would make me and a lot of others very happy!! :P

    Read all about it:

when cebas says it going to be Q1 2005 what they really mean is Q4 2006
they ll probably show something at siggraph and then go silent for a year or two
but now i m seriously intrigued by vlado s comment

It ´s a bit early to say who won, don´t you think so.
I hope Cebas will not make the same fault again.

They pissed off a lot of their customers last time.

MTD in Stage-1 is still not usefull.

And it looks like they had no time to fix this faster because they worked on Stage-2.

Pay for it now get the working features 8 month later, it´s common practice in the software business.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there already like four or five different rendering systems for Maya you can get? There's Mental Ray and PRman off the top of my head.

That is correct. Been working with MR alot. It is very cumbersome to get the result I want.
Then there is recently released Turtle by Illuminate Labs. Looks like a competitor to VRay and the likes.
And as you mentioned PRman. In fact virtually any Renderman-compliant renderers is supported through Mayas Rib-export.
Surely there is abunch of other renderers aswell that has their own strenghs and weaknesses.

But still there is no, IMHO, renderer that share VRays features in terms of speed and quality. Certainly not with such a userfriendly interface to the renderer.

              cheers!

Just on a quick note - maya's rib export is (at least was in version 4.0 which i used) less than primitive.
Only poly geometry, no materials, no anim...

But there are at least two better ones aviable:
                  Pixar's MtoR (Maya to Renderman)
                  Animallogic's Mayaman

Those are said to support more features...

Other than that I have to agree about Vray...

Oops! Did I say that outloud? Well, there goes my credability.

Yeah, you're right, Mental Ray can have nice results but for me it's just too damn slow for the quality I get. However, PRman is an industry tested product for like the last ten years if I remember. It won an academy award for technological advancement I believe. I've never actually been able to try PRman though, especially since I'm not a Maya user (Although I've been looking to maybe purchase it). From what I've heard it's kind of like Mantra for Houdini, it's very open and very flexible, but only if you know what you're doing.

You can try 3Delight, it's free(yet) and got very decent range of renderman features. I would say that 3Delight is able to become very serious competitor to PRMan....

About Pixars Photorealistic RenderMan renderer. It adresses a userbase completely different from renderers such as VRay, Brazil and the likes. At $5000 per processor (not per computer) it is out of range from most of the indiestudios which I think is the majority of the users in this forum (please correct me if I´m wrong).

Been studying the renderman language a couple of years ago and played with Bluemoon to get results. It is a powerful and flexible programming language! And as Mudvin stated, 3Delight is one among a bunch of rendermancompliant renderers. A pretty comprehensive list of renderers can be found here: http://www.dotcsw.com/links.html#renderers

                          cheers!
