  • Material Libraries

Is my memory deceiving me, I could have sworn I saw a collection of Vray material libraries in the downloads section about a month ago?? I didn't download or bookmark them at the time but thought I woud take a look just now and couldn't find them?

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks
    Anthony

I've always wondered why a renderer doesn't come with a set of default materials library..... I mean, glass is glass, chrome, aluminium, wood etc etc etc.....

I appreciate everyone has their way of creating materials, but it'd still be nice (my favourite way of creating solid, useable yet highly realistic materials are from Austris's website aka Viscorbel.com).

I've been asking this for years, the answer was the VRSCANS, and although impressive, I don't need that.

The material library refered to here are the vrmats that was available for download with LOW RES textures on the previous ChaosGroup site. It's for Sketchup and Rhino. You can also load it into Max, if you really wanted to. But since the vrmat editor is broken in 2017...

They sure do. Loving their materials and its a big help on projects.

The point is, when I started using V-Ray some 10 or what years ago, everybody else was playing catch up. It was great knowing I'm using the best engine out there and when my mates and colleagues always said they wished their engine had a certain feature I would usually say V-Ray has that feature for years already. I can't help but notice how times have changed and it's now almost the opposite. NOW I keep reading things like "but Corona has it", or "Fstorm has it" etc.

Don't get me wrong, I still love V-Ray and will probably use it for years to come. Just can't help noticing increasing talks about "those other engines". I'm not getting any younger and I'm starting to care less about whats going on under the hood and about what is "physcially correct", and care more about getting a pretty picture/animation and getting the job done quicker. The last few service packs are heading in the right direction.
                    Kind Regards,
                    Morne

RE:Siger...does it have it's own material or does it just populate the standard vray material with the correct bitmaps and values? I'd hate to one, have to get used to a new interface, and two, be locked into maintaining siger if I need to rerender a current project in several years (i.e, the dreaded missing .dll...)

My circle teases me about having an iPhone and they say that I have one because I am old. The fact is, I have so much invested in Apple's ecosystem, I can't switch. I asked the Verizon sales lady while getting my iPhone 7, which sells better, the iPhone or Android. She said, it is 50/50, however, there are 10X as many choices in Android, so it is kind of skewed. I am seeing the same in render engines. 1/2 of the people are using V-Ray and the other half are using all the others. Us old timers use V-Ray because we like it and because we are so invested in the V-Ray ecosystem. The issue is going to be the new kids on the block who are not as invested in any one engine. When I buy assets, 1/2 are Corona, so that niche is closing, fast!

It has its own interface for choosing stuff, but then it populates that into the normal VRayMaterial in Max material editor. You can change stuff and make up your own library. One of those awesome plugins I'm glad I purchased
