I don't think Vray is expensive given the fact that your license gives you about 4 years of free upgrades. And when Vray upgrades it definitely upgrades not like Autodesk.

It's the pesky issue of having 100+ staff that need to pay for food and all that

Why not? Chaosgroup delivers quite big things even in free upgrades. There has been already so much resource-expensive features that are not trivial to implement in recent free upgrades since 3.0 was released, and even bigger updates in each major V-Ray version (2.0, 3.0). Those upgrades come along once in about 4 years, and cost about as much as half of the price of 3ds Max maintenance which you have to pay every year (to get new broken 3ds Max mostly).

I don't see where is a room for complaining here. If you divide it to individual years, you pretty much pay around $100/year for upgrades. That's a lot cheaper than Corona. Yes, you had to pay those 900 bucks at the start, but if you stop upgrading now, you get to keep your V-Ray. You don't get to keep anything that you pay just subscription for. That's dirt cheap given how robust and feature rich V-Ray is, and how many different production scenarios it can handle.

Yes, you can find examples of even cheaper software and point finger at it, like Z-brush, but keep in mind last version (R7) was released in January of 2015. If R8 gets released around January of 2017, that will be 2 years between releases. I would much rather have Chaosgroup keep getting more money, and keep development pace reasonable.

With all my respect , but you must be kidding!
I am more than happy to pay for full license price for the new V-Ray 4.0 :P (pls Vlado don't take it literally=D )
joking aside it is quite fair to pay for a major upgrade when you use and benefit from all the SPs for 4 years imo .
              Regards,

Yes there are several, but it's highly unlikely the average user will find it, because V-Ray just renders too fast
                      Kind Regards,

Myself, and probably a lot of the people here are here because we can say: hey vlado, this is a problem... and vlado will read it and respond, in real time sometimes, fix it that day quite often if it is possible to do so. Or tell us what we are doing wrong.

Rendering engines are mystical magic boxes with buttons on them for most of us, vray's tech support and forums are what we are really paying for, imo.

Just to quote and to add thing that for most of you is not worthing: the policy to distribute the standalone version with the 3dsmax plugin give me (and all of you interested) to test Vray4Blender with "just" the cost of your time testing the workflow switching. It's a small small thing but I really appreciate the effort by Chaos to dedicate resources to support this.

Thanks in advance and good 4.0 development...

It spits out discount codes for vray licenses when a bucket changes and moves to the next position. It's hard to catch...
