  • Transforming Vertices for 15 minutes before render

    Hi all,
    I upgraded to 3ds max 2017 and vray 3.40.03 and windows 10 pro 64 anniversary , i was 2016 and vray 3.40.02 before,
When i press render i have to wait for 15 minutes to transform vertices and another 10 to cancel the render. I also see that the scene is using virtual memory for some reason i have deactivated displacement and all effects from the render menu. I have 32 GB of ram .

I have a quite large scene 1.6 gb about 20 million polygons.

Is that normal ? The scene in 3ds max 2016 was slow but that is a whole new level.

Do you have things like Forest pack or Railclone in your scene?

No, I have forest pack installed but i am not using it. My memory says 24 gb physical and 36 gb virtual. In max 2016 the same scene was 24 gb physical.

I'm not sure what might be happening; if you can send us the scene to support@chaosgroup.com we will be able to tell you more about it.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

OK i just archived it. I use dropbox but do you prefer we-transfer ? It's really difficult to find what the problem is. Since i upgraded OS, max and vray ! I am working on another project for the next week and i will see if there is something wrong with the system or if it was the 2016 to 2017. I am really unhappy with 3ds max 2017 so far i usually upgrade after 2 SP but i see a lot of bugs.

It maybe something generating heavy geometry at render-time. For eg it happened to me more than once to have lots of splines with renderable checkbox enabled.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to check it out and see whether we can improve something.

              Best regards,

I want to write a new thread but I see this and I thing it will be the same thing:

When I render a scene on local comp, its ok and transform vertices is shown for about 1 second. But now I have new second computer so I try to render with DR. It works but with simple scene transform vertices take for about 5-10 seconds. I open up VRay message window and it wrote Saving 3ds max scene... as a first line and then everything else. So I think this is a problem why it takes so long. Why it saving a scene and how I can disable that?

                Thanks a lot.

                  Hello,

When you render with DR - we need to save the scene with all your changes so that we can send it to DR hosts - that's why it is saving.

                  Best regards,

I will test the scene and post back here with my findings.

The scene has been forwarded to Vlado and he will continue with the debugging process.

Thank you, Tashko! Hope that it's not a nightmare to debug.

It seems that the delay happens when V-Ray calls 3ds Max to save the scene in order to transfer it to the render slaves for DR. Now I'm trying to figure out what is the reason for the slow save.

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado

                              Thank you Vlado,
I have an open thread at Autodesk regarding this slow save problem. They say to roll back the anniversary update, but i won't have time to roll back 6 machines for at least 3 weeks! I am working on a new project with 300K polygons at the moment and i think there is a problem saving files even when files are small. It is not that bad obviously.

I am glad that you can replicate the problem too.
