Assign a baked illumination map to the diffuse channel of a material, apply the material to your object, put on a vertex paint modifier. Choose which vertex channel you want the data on and under assign vertex colours choose diffuse only, colour by vertex and tick on mapping and no radiosity. Hit assign and then in your object properties, you'll be able to tick on vertex channel display and which of the channels you want to show in your viewport.
Thanks for the advice. Although this is one route, it requires UV maps for my objects which is what I am trying to avoid using vertex maps. Im pretty sure you can bake to vertex colours in Maya so just hoping you can do the same in max.
