  • Maya to 3dsmax

Is there a simple way to transfer all geometry and materials from maya to max without the need to strip out all materials and then re-apply them to the model once in max ?

I'm talking specifically about vray materials with textures and all settings.

The short answer is NO. There are number of ways to do that but all of them will require some manual or scripting work.
The simplest solution would be to export .vrscene from 3dsmax and import it in Maya via V-Ray Scene Manager, this approach will preserve everything including lights, materials, textures and etc but you won't be able to modify anything in Maya.

Can I do that the other way round. Vrayscene from maya to max ? That's the direction I'm going.

One other question. If it is possible to export from Maya as a vrayscene will all materials transfer to max ? Can I then export the material library and apply these materials to a standard max scene ?

Yes, VRayVRmatMtl could load materials from .vrscenes, not sure if everything will look the same way but it is worth to try it.
