  • using the vray shadow pass or similar

i have a few objects in a studio setup and i want to render each separately to be able to move then around for composition, everything is ok except for the shadows, how do i use the passes to get the gentle shadows that fall off the object and make it look like its attached to the floor?

Hi! If i understood correct, u need a matte object so it carries the shadows/gi with it so u get every single object with alpha including its shadows. U dont need passes compositing for that.

Yes, and u can to it another way without assigning wrapper material, just by going on Vrayproperties has the same matte object properties. Just make ur plane on the floor a bit big cause gi spreads too much sometimes. cheers

ok so i got the shadow pass but how do you use it correctly to get just the nice shadows under the model? i had to do a invert and erase alot of the parts that were grainy and not needed, here is a shot with the shadows in the beauty pass and the matte shadow render element but i cant seem to get them composed properlyClick image for larger version

U do not need the shadow pass, u just need to render with the floor as matte
(fyi shadow pass instead of being inverted can be composited as "subtract" mode)

If u render ur object with shadows and gi in ur alpha (as matte that is), just export a color id or something for ur geometry so u can invert and separate control us shadows/gi.

In general, if u wanna boost shadows in a full back to beauty comp, export a "matteshadow" pass and use it as mask in comp with curves adjustment.

There are many ways to do this, sorry if i confuse u. Only thing u need to do here is to render ur main object as is, and ur floor as matte without any passes and u should have an alpha channel with ur object and its shadow only ready to drag n drop into any backplate.

i tried to render out the matte shadows and that is the shadow image i originally posted, the color pass when i render it out doesnt not come with just the object and shadows, if i save as png it get only the object and no shadows but with exr i can get either only the object or the object with the hdri as the background i used to light the scene, can you post an example or something?

Sorry for the late replies, im dead busy at work. If u can share a simple scene of how u have setup ur things, i ll take a look at it. Not the actual props or textures, i ll use a teapot but keep ur hdr at low res in there etc and ur settings. cheers
