    Hey Guys,

Quick question, how do i save Vray materials so i can import them and use them in different scenes? and is it possible to save the material from 3ds Max and use it in a Maya and vice versa? as i work with Vray in both applications. Thanks

I can't speak about loading vray materials between different applications but you can use material libraries in 3ds max.

For Max<->Maya transport, it depends on whether you want to be able to edit those materials in the other application. If the answer is "no", then things are a bit easier and involve writing out a .vrscene file with the materials and then loading them through the VRayVRmatMtl plugin.

If you want to edit the materials, then you can import materials from .vrscene files into Maya as native Maya shading nodes with various degrees of success. However this is not possible for 3ds Max right now.

If you want to just reuse materials in one of these applications then using the native tools in Max or Maya (f.e. .mat files in 3ds Max as Alex_M suggested) is probably the best way to go.

There are some initiatives for cross-platform portable materials (f.e. MaterialX) and I hope they will make this easier in the future.

      Best regards,
      Vlado
