  • Vray and Raytrace mat

Hey everyone. Im wondering if vray has issues with maxes raytrace materail? Randomly Im getting weird results. All tho some times animations render fine, others it flickers and what have you.
    Thanks.

You shouldnt use the raytrace material with vray. Why do you need it? vray material is the replacement for the raytrace material.

im using vray free...whats the solution then? theres no vray material

other than the obvious, what can I do? I have till the end of the day to render 2 cubic VR scenes that crash in viz4's default renderer, so I am stuck with trying to learn vray free...ive been struggling with blotches everywhere and now i cant use raytrace materials because thats the cause im so screwed...

If you want to use VRay free, you're going to have to convert all of your Raytrace materials to Standard and use the VRaymap in the Reflection slot. Any Standard materials that use a Raytrace map in the Reflection slot will also have to be changed to use the VRaymap.

Not to be harsh, but if I were you, I'd find out why the VIZ 4 default renderer is crashing instead of trying to use freeware that you don't have experience with when you're already past your deadline.

The best place for answers about VIZ 4 is the viz.general forum, which you can access from the Autodesk website. Another place you can ask is over at CGArchitects in their Autodesk VIZ forum.

If you are using radiosity, you'll want to provide your settings. Also, provide your Global Raytracer settings, particularly the depth.

Thanks for the advice. I know you are right, but I saw this as a chance and good challenge to test out Vray.

FINALLY I have 1 decent image out of this project using vray free thanks to the advice in this forum. The answer seems to be a combination of adjusting the QMC settings, using photon mapping for secondary bounces, using IES lighting, and using vrayMap on all existing raytrace materials. Somewhere in there was my solution.

Now im rendering a cubic VR to see if everything works as it should.

If all goes to plan, hopefully the client is still willing to pay....Stressfull couple of days for me though, but hopefully worth it. Vray free may have earnt enough $ to get the full version on this job alone!

Anyway, thanks to all who share their knowledge. Keep up the great work!

well vray mat doesnt offer slots for diffusion (not diffuse slot) and also its fake glossy highlites are reflection dependant which means using raytracning when you dont need it.
raytrace mat has all the controls for specs and diffusions thats what i need most

A diffusion slot would be a nice addition but VRay is a raytracer so it always uses raytracing.

you can and I DO use the raytrace material with vray. You just cant use it for reflection and refraction. But I still use it for its other lighting options, and have had little trouble with it.

I tend to agree with percydaman, based on some testing raytrace mat renders around same time as vray mat, however offers more options such as diffusion and extra luminosity. I suppouse you can use standart oren-nayar blinn but that one renders nearly triple longer then raytrace. And yeah I havent had many problems with it at this point. What I would like to see in future versions of vray is a very powerful shader like brazil advanced mat or fr advanced mat.
