  • Bitmap Pager - still a 'no-no'?

I have some models that I have put into my seen with lots of 8x8k texturemaps asigned to them. My RAM use while rendering has jumped through the roof, and until I do some testing, I can only assume it is these high-res textures that are causing the problem.

I know that Bitmap Pager is supposed to help out here, but as I understand it, VRay doesn't like it, or at least using the bitmap pager affects rendering performance.

Rather than manually opening all the associated texturemaps, downsizing and re-linking top the low-res maps, is there a more automated way to help here?
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

You don't have to do it manually. I use pixamoon's Bitmap resizing script and it works very well : http://www.pixamoon.com/shop/4587562...ng-.../9333016
For a free alternative, try this one : https://renderpeople.com/plugin/ from renderpeople.

Yes - I've just purchased pixamoon's script - very clever!

with the nightly from a couple of days ago, on an old evermotion scene, i saw the log stating BP was active, and -hear hear- being deactivated for the time it took to render.
Should you need textures to fit a ram budget, convert them to tiled EXRs, load them with a VRayHDRI loader, and set your texture cache size accordingly.

          Get this:

Convert everything to tiled tx format or tiled exr format and you'll never run out of ram again.

TXs are better for 90% of times. Most textures are 8bit after all.

indeed, and yet the double size for data is vastly dwarfed in importance by correct mip loading.
It'll not be the 16bpc running you outta ram.
