  • animating distance with stereoscopic rig

Is it common practice to animate the stereo distance when animating ?

In Avatar, they rendered/filmed with different eye distances for foreground / background in some shots, to keep the 3d look in the background. This may work good for film if you have the time to try and play with it.
But for VR it's a whole different story. Because you won't only change the feeling of depth but the feeling of your own body size. And to animate this will look pretty odd I guess.
Maby not if you just change it very carefully and over a long time.

Regarding VR, animating the eye distance will just look like the scene around you is scaling up or down. So if you want that effect, sure, you can do it.
