  • VR/Cubemap apps

    Hey guys,

I've recently rendered a stereographic 360 for testing purposes and I'm going to be (for the time being) viewing them using google cardboard. There are plenty of VR apps that display 360's, but seemingly very few that display stereo cube maps (12:1 ratio). I've managed to find just one for android, and so far none for iphone.

What are you guys using to display them? The google cardboard app for android appears not to let you load any of your own images(?) - or if it does, isn't obviously apparent.

Try FullDive for android. And try putting your images in the PANO folder of the camera DCIM folder or something for the cardboard app.

IOS seems to have problems with very big images. I had to split them to 12 squares.
We build those apps with unity. I don't know any drag and drop viewer system. The resolution problem might be the reason for this.

The difference between 2k and 1k per square was not too big since the res of the display is still quite low for vr.
So 12 1k*1k maps should work very well. You'd need to go down to 512 for older devices but most smartphones which are newer than 3 years should be able to handle it.

Having that said, I always went back to two 2-4k spheral images. because of the app size and the fact that there are so many devices out there.
There is just no way to guarantee that it works on all. So the easy rocksolit way always wins
German guy, sorry for my English.

          Hey there.

Do you have any follow up on this matter?

I have also been testing some VR tours with stereographic images (6000 x 3000), and see them in Oculus Quest 2 using Orbix360.

But i do not find much free web based services to upload cubemaps as Orbix360 for the stereographic... any suggestions?
