  • Zdepth Banding

    Hi All,

I've been noticing a lot of banding in my zdepth passes. Is this a monitor issue or a data fidelity issue?

The zdepth max is set to 2600" in this shot. Does the larger the zdepth max number create more worse banding? Is there anyway around this to get a nice smooth gradient?

    I'm using a 4k Viewsonic with 14-bit LUT (VP2780-4k). Graphics card is a GTX980.

    Thanks!
    Andrew

I am pretty sure it is a display issue. Technically, the zDepth will be correct.

Even with a 14bit LUT in your display, the image passed to it by a consumer graphics card will still be 8bit per channel. As Oliver said, it will be a display issue, the actual image should be fine. You can mitigate the posterisation/banding by hardware calibrating your monitor, working in a colour space aware app - or more expensive, use a quadro/fire graphics card in a 10bit per channel aware app as well as doing the previous things. If it is just the z depth that you are seeing problems with, I wouldn't worry too much. All the best Ben
