  • MR Arc&Design has got something V-ray hasn't got or ????

    Dear people,

I discovered, that Arc&Design's ambient occlusion paremeters (under special effects) also included a function called "use colors from other materials - Exact AO".

Does V-ray also have this feature? I tell you, it's a veeeery sweet thing, where you get color bleeding and much less "dirty" ambient occlusion, sort of a poor mans GI. Check it out if you haven't

Looking forward to hear your thoughts about this.

    Best, Jesper Colding

It's just a lot slower and shittier single bonce version of what V-Ray does with Brute Force as primary GI. No point to ever have such thing in V-Ray. It's present in Mental Ray because Mental Ray never had capable GI, let alone capable brute force GI, so it was a tool to make their very bad interpolated GI less bad.

Vray has something very similar for its Irradiance Map. It is called detail enhancement and it is a lot smarter, as you can enable it globally, and do not need to go through every single scene material and enable it with matching settings. Mental Ray's per-material implementation of it was completely fubar.

That being said, if you are still concerned with AO or poor man's GI methods these days, you are most likely doing something wrong.
