Bevel the edges and use Fresnel reflections with the IOR set high, probably above 10, might work (or a custom falloff map in reflection). The only thing is if you can see those bevels facing away from the camera. It really doesn't look too realistic though but almost as if the atmosphere is creating the effect. You may have to use post in the end to add a glow anyway.
Would be interesting to see what you come up with though.
Yeah it's so monochrome you could actually use a standard material with basic specular instead of VRay's reflections (maybe even the new specular feature in 1.45?). It all depends on how the rest of the scene is lit. Not positive how it would interact with the bottom of those objects but there is an edge glow feature in MAX post. The only problem you might run into with edge glow is that it may not fade properly with distance. Can't remember right now but it may be workable.
What is that scene anyway? It looks really interesting as if it's from a Japanese animation.
i will try the edge glow effect too, problem is only the edges that face towards the light should glow, i don´t know if this is possible with the edglow effect.
but i can create theses edges seperate and apply an glow effect on it.
i will try.
