  • revit into 3ds

    Hi,

got a model from an architect - it was model in revit and saved out as a .dwg - using viz 2005 - did a file link. Model came in fine - looks fine but the poly/objects (especially mullion and glass) have all come in as bits and piece (faces). Is there a way to consolidate/weld that isn't too laborious?

Sounds like to me thats the way its been modelled in Revit .... modelled in face's rather than solid's.

are they on the same layer .. ?.. all the bits i mean?

      Hi,

thanks for getting back to me - like I said, we were given the model. REALLY slow to move stuff around / work with. I'm guessing you're right - they probably modelled in faces.

All the bits come out on their own layer

      Layer:3D_Mullions x 400+

      Layer:3D_WIN x 400+

The floor slab / columns and walls however come out as a solid. Just craziness with the glass/facade/mullions. The lack of response... does this mean I'm stuffed? The model isn't that bad; its just navigation in the viewport is horrendous slow. Even with all of the above chunks shown as blocks.

Well, the only option is to collapse them to one object then weld all the vertices. To collapse, select all the windows (hopefully they are named decently) then got to "Utility Panel" and to "collapse", choose to collapse to one object. Then goto to the modify pane and go to vertex mode, select all the vertices and with a small threshold (.001 or something) and press weld, probably will take a while. Repeat for the mullions.

we've also had some horrible luck with revit models exported to 3ds.. though i think in our cases it was more the architects modeling just plain wrong (i hope) as almost all of the curtain walls and a good portion of the normal walls needed to be rebuilt since there was a huge number of duplicate faces.

Sometimes its just plain easier to start from scratch heh.

thanks for the feedback - will try your tip RErender when I get into the office on Monday - I am keeping my fingers crossed that we won't have to rebuild as the building is massive. I'm just hoping that the glass is fine rendered out from their model. Otherwise it'll be PS hell (probably not); its easily enough to replace I guess - sometimes the hardest thing to do is to look at someone's file (shitty) and decide that yup; rebuild.
