things arnt as stable as the previous versions as yet .. so we need to iron those out ... but look at it this way .. 1.5 is closer because of the Alpha tester's .. and then you guy's will have it .
No, it's not.
Let me explain. First of all there are only Vlado and peter testing their Product. (Now THAT's unfair! ) Then they gave it to some well known customers. Those are customers who spend their time and imagination to find bugs, report them, make suggestions and so on. Most of the time you can't use those builds in production at all, cause there are heavy bugs that slipped through the fingers of v&p! Do you want these builds? Do you want to spend time and effort to find bugs and make the product better this way? Well then go ahead, and write the chaos guys a mail. (it's clear you have to be a legal, registered customer for that... ) But let me warn you. The joy of a cool new feature get's really damaged when things don't work like you'd expect it and certain bugs can really make you go crazy.
What would you think would happen if they would release those "buggy builds" directly to all the customers. People would go crazy, they'd say they'd need a refund and so on. Furthermore even beta builds got supplied to the cr@cker community. Those builds where buggy and people could'nt use it for anything else than testing. However, the image of the Software suffers from that. So i think the way the chaos guys do it is exactly the way to go. Then a last thing. Do you want us testers to write posts like this with infos about a new release or not? Maybe one should do a poll about it cause some people seem to get upset when they see cool new things from coming builds they can't use yet.

for me it´s like showing a candy to a kid and then hiding it again.
version 1.5 was announced for may, now we have october.
sure it´s great to see what future vray version will bring, but i prefer to have an announcement when things have gone gold and there is a release date.
The majority of people seem to like getting previews, which is why I posted the info in this thread. We could start giving preview threads a warning in the topic, that way if you don't like preview you won't have to read them. Unless you get too curious....
I love hearing about new features, especially the ones Torgeir has described. I think private testing is essential in the early stages of a build, really until the build is fairly stable. I am looking forward to the 1.5 release and hope to be able to use it soon!
However...
A more prudent approach to informing the buying public of progress and previewing what is to come, might be for the information (and answers to questions) to come directly from Chaos Group or a designated spokesperson (like Torgeir, for example). I don't know if it is a good practise for it to be publicly known who is privately testing or for everyone who is privately testing to be able to divulge information about and publicly discuss the current build.
There are good reasons for the public at large to be left out of the testing at this stage. There are also good reasons for the private testing to remain for the most part private. Perfectly nice people end up getting called names if they voice any disappointment (serious or otherwise) at not being privvy to the latest and greatest build. That could be avoided in a number of ways.
this looks great...distributed irradiance map is more than i hoped for.
correct viewport display of vray mats is also very welcome.
i'm not sure about the domelight...if i understand right it will give the same results as a solid color skylight (environment color) but more optimised (faster, cleaner?).
The new smoothing feature is VERY useful (or well should be).
It's not possible to do like some of you say "use at render", since 3dsmax can't handle complex subdivisions memory wise. Try applying iterations=3 at at a 500k poly object and you will see what I mean. If Vlado has done this right, like they always do, then this shouldn't create problems for memory, right?
Also, it's a great great bonus that it's view dependent, iterations=2,3 may cut it normally but if you move up close then that isn't enough for most objects.
And, yes I think it's very good that we get to know about these features beforehand.
