  • HDRI map types.

i am wondering about the map types supported in VrayHDRI.

would i assign this map as a spherical or a mirrored ball HDRI? ...i am thinking mirrored ball, but i just want someone else to tell me that is correct.

what about this image? ...what type of map would this be?

The first could be mirrorred ball or angular (they look almost the same). Try both in VRay and see which one of them doesn't look distorted.

    The second is spherical environment.

do different software companies refer to the maps differently? can a map reffered to as mirrored ball in vray be the same as a map called sperical in another program?

the map i am using came from here..

      http://www.lightworks-user.com/hdri_...ealtexture.htm

i am using the "Pillnitz Park 2 HDRI files," it is the last image on the page. it is also the top image above (the circular one) on my post above. on lightworks site i downloaded the 'spherical' file, and that is the image it gave me. although, the image beside all of the versions would be considered spherical according to vray.

      also....

i have another question. in my Vray message window, i get the following message when i render this image.....

warning: "HDRI map locked, not loading"

my renderings are definetly being effected by me trying to use HDRI, so i am not sure what this warning is in reference to.

      also....

is the "cubic" map type the same as what others might refer to as "vertical cross"?

Naming doesn't seem to be consistent. The terms I've heard are these:
Mirrored ball: this is just that, a piture of a reflective ball. This doesn't have a lot of resolution in the area behind the ball.
Angular: Looks almost like a mirrored ball image but has more resolution around the edges. Typically made from images taken from more than one angle that have been combined.
Vertical cross or Cubic: Six images that correspond to the sides of a cube.
Latitude/Longitude or Spherical Environment: The most common one, looks like a mercator projection earth map.

The reason VRay calls them spherical is that they need spherical environment mapping to look right.

warning: "HDRI map locked, not loading"
Ignore this, it just means that the HDRI is in memory already and isn't loaded again.

        Yes

i actually have seen that program and i have it on my pc, i've used it to make my own hdri's, its really fun. also, the site given by the topic poster on the hdri maps is really good, the maps are very high quality. i've only seen better in purchasable hdri packages, of course, each map in that is like 50mb big! haha

this product was featured yesterday on cgarchitect. i am still trying to get it to run without any luck so far. when i try to run it, i ge the following error.. "This application failed to start because qt-mt230nc.dll was not found"

according to the website i need the QT library, and that is where i am having problems. i went to trolltechs website, and tried to download it, but just ran into server errors.

                    ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qtopia/deskt...ktop-1.7.0.exe

is the QT library available elsehwere? ....i am really not familiar with what the QT library is, or how it works.[/quote]

I just copied the DLL to the same folder the hdrie executable is in - that seemed to work fine for me.
